BECOMING AN ALLY TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES TRAINING

College students with disabilities have been called "a forgotten minority" in higher education (Junco & Salter, 2004).
In order to address this issue and improve the campus climate for college students with disabilities, I used SafeZone Training for the LGBTQ community as a model to create a similar educational program, "Becoming an Ally to People with Disabilities."

This is an interactive presentation that can be given either in person and online.

In this presentation, I:
  • Cover definitions of disability,
  • Explain the Medical and Social Models of Disability,
  • Educate people on language (e.g., person-first language, reclaiming language),
  • Provide suggestions on how to respectfully interact with people with a variety of disabilities,
  • Describe universal design,
  • Discuss able-bodied privilege and ally behavior, and
  • Engage with the audience to explore ways they can act as allies for people with disabilities in their particular contexts.
I have presented this training to several groups at Miami University, including Social Justice Studies majors, Resident Assistants, Professional Staff in Residence Life, and first year students attending a Cultural Competency Week. I have also presented this training to Resident Assistants at DePaul University. This training can be adapted to fit any needs or specific contexts.
