BECOMING AN ALLY TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES TRAINING
College students with disabilities have been called "a forgotten minority" in higher education (Junco & Salter, 2004).
This is an interactive presentation that can be given either in person and online.

- Cover definitions of disability,
- Explain the Medical and Social Models of Disability,
- Educate people on language (e.g., person-first language, reclaiming language),
- Provide suggestions on how to respectfully interact with people with a variety of disabilities,
- Describe universal design,
- Discuss able-bodied privilege and ally behavior, and
- Engage with the audience to explore ways they can act as allies for people with disabilities in their particular contexts.
I have presented this training to several groups at Miami University, including Social Justice Studies majors, Resident Assistants, Professional Staff in Residence Life, and first year students attending a Cultural Competency Week. I have also presented this training to Resident Assistants at DePaul University. This training can be adapted to fit any needs or specific contexts.
